Explanation of the Vocabulary.
The Enchiridion has only 1330 unique words. The following vocabulary has been created by merging the Perseus website vocabulary from the three separate works attributed to Epictetus: the Discourses, the Fragments, and the Enchiridion. The gloss or 'short definitions' are the ones suggested by the Perseus Enchiridion short definition; this definition is not specific to any reading in the Enchiridion. In fact, the gloss may not accurately represent the correct meaning at all; often you will need to look at the full LSJ definition and search for the correct gloss. Some definitions are lacking - for various reasons. Hopefully, the definitions will be improved as the Enchiridion Group progresses.
The Perseus hopper website has a vocabulary tool. I have found that the vocabulary tool 'loads' correctly in Internet Explorer 7. The Firefox browser returns a server error. There is also a vocabulary 'vote' tool on the Perseus hopper website. The vote tool gives a weighted suggestion for which specific LSJ meaning applies to a word in a passage. I encourage all who are able to utilize the tool to do so. That way, the meanings for the Enchiridion will be available to all who use the Perseus site and will be a permanent addition to the very helpful website.
The Enchiridion and New Testament lists have been 'joined' on the betacode lemmas. There may be lemmas that do not match correctly because of the differing lemma formats between the LSJ and BADG lexicons. The New Testament Frequency is taken from Tichendorf's NT as present on the MorphGNT.org website. There may be some differences between Tischendorf and the USB Greek New Testament.
The frequencies for the books are as follows: DiscX: Discourses; FragX: Fragments; EnchX: Enchiridion; NTX: New Testament. The length of the Enchiridion (5200 words), Discourses, Fragments and New Testament (113,000 words) are all different. (The Enchiridion is about the same length as the book of Hebrews). A weighted frequency value is really the only way to compare the frequency between the various books. I'm hoping a database engine will be possible for word studies and passage comparisons, but for the time being, the table of words, frequencies and definitions will have to suffice. I have included a 'sortkey' and the betacode word as the last two columns for those who want to import the vocabulary into a database for further inspection. Links to the Perseus vocabulary tool will be present in the next version of the vocabuarly table.
A 'Y' in the Name column indicates the word is a proper name. A 'Y' in the Special column indicates the word will be listed in the 'Special Vocabulary' table. Special vocabulary indicates that Epictetus uses this word uniquely, or as a key term. He may or may not use the term as other Stoic philosophers do. There are about 120 'special' terms. The Special vocabulary table will be coming soon.
