1 Τοῦ Δαυιδ· πρὸ τοῦ χρισθῆναι.
Κύριος φωτισμός μου καὶ σωτήρ μου· τίνα φοβηθήσομαι;
κύριος ὑπερασπιστὴς τῆς ζωῆς μου· ἀπὸ τίνος δειλιάσω;
2 ἐν τῷ ἐγγίζειν ἐπ᾽ ἐμὲ κακοῦντας τοῦ φαγεῖν τὰς σάρκας μου
οἱ θλίβοντές με καὶ οἱ ἐχθροί μου αὐτοὶ ἠσθένησαν καὶ ἔπεσαν·
3 ἐὰν παρατάξηται ἐπ᾽ ἐμὲ παρεμβολή, οὐ φοβηθήσεται ἡ καρδία μου·
ἐὰν ἐπαναστῇ ἐπ᾽ ἐμὲ πόλεμος, ἐν ταύτῃ ἐγὼ ἐλπίζω.
4 μίαν ᾐτησάμην παρὰ κυρίου, ταύτην ἐκζητήσω·
τοῦ κατοικεῖν με ἐν οἴκῳ κυρίου πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας τῆς ζωῆς μου,
τοῦ θεωρεῖν με τὴν τερπνότητα τοῦ κυρίου
καὶ ἐπισκέπτεσθαι τὸν ναὸν αὐτοῦ.
5 ὅτι ἔκρυψέν με ἐν σκηνῇ ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κακῶν μου·
ἐσκέπασέν με ἐν ἀποκρύφῳ τῆς σκηνῆς αὐτοῦ,
ἐν πέτρᾳ ὕψωσέν με·
6 καὶ νῦν ἰδοὺ ὕψωσεν τὴν κεφαλήν μου ἐπ᾽ ἐχθρούς μου·
ἐκύκλωσα καὶ ἔθυσα ἐν τῇ σκηνῇ αὐτοῦ θυσίαν ἀλαλαγμοῦ,
ᾄσομαι καὶ ψαλῶ τῷ κυρίῳ.
7 εἰσάκουσον, κύριε, τῆς φωνῆς μου, ἧς ἐκέκραξα·
ἐλέησόν με καὶ εἰσάκουσόν μου.
8 σοὶ εἶπεν ἡ καρδία μου ᾿Εζήτησεν τὸ πρόσωπόν μου·
τὸ πρόσωπόν σου, κύριε, ζητήσω.
9 μὴ ἀποστρέψῃς τὸ πρόσωπόν σου ἀπ᾽ ἐμοῦ,
μὴ ἐκκλίνῃς ἐν ὀργῇ ἀπὸ τοῦ δούλου σου·
βοηθός μου γενοῦ, μὴ ἀποσκορακίσῃς με
καὶ μὴ ἐγκαταλίπῃς με, ὁ θεὸς ὁ σωτήρ μου.
10 ὅτι ὁ πατήρ μου καὶ ἡ μήτηρ μου ἐγκατέλιπόν με,
ὁ δὲ κύριος προσελάβετό με.
11 νομοθέτησόν με, κύριε, τῇ ὁδῷ σου
καὶ ὁδήγησόν με ἐν τρίβῳ εὐθείᾳ ἕνεκα τῶν ἐχθρῶν μου.
12 μὴ παραδῷς με εἰς ψυχὰς θλιβόντων με,
ὅτι ἐπανέστησάν μοι μάρτυρες ἄδικοι,
καὶ ἐψεύσατο ἡ ἀδικία ἑαυτῇ.
13 πιστεύω τοῦ ἰδεῖν τὰ ἀγαθὰ κυρίου ἐν γῇ ζώντων.
14 ὑπόμεινον τὸν κύριον·
ἀνδρίζου, καὶ κραταιούσθω ἡ καρδία σου,
καὶ ὑπόμεινον τὸν κύριον.

1. <<Ψαλμος του Δαβιδ.>> Ο Κυριος ειναι φως μου και σωτηρια μου· τινα θελω φοβηθη; ο Κυριος ειναι δυναμις της ζωης μου· απο τινος θελω δειλιασει;
2. Οτε επλησιασαν επ' εμε οι πονηρευομενοι, δια να καταφαγωσι την σαρκα μου, οι αντιδικοι και οι εχθροι μου, αυτοι προσεκρουσαν και επεσον.
3. Και αν παραταχθη εναντιον μου στρατευμα, η καρδια μου δεν θελει φοβηθη· και αν πολεμος σηκωθη επ' εμε, και τοτε θελω ελπιζει.
4. Εν εζητησα παρα του Κυριου, τουτο θελω εκζητει· το να κατοικω εν τω οικω του Κυριου πασας τας ημερας της ζωης μου, να θεωρω το καλλος του Κυριου και να επισκεπτωμαι τον ναον αυτου.
5. Διοτι εν ημερα συμφορας θελει με κρυψει εν τη σκηνη αυτου· Θελει με κρυψει εν τω αποκρυφω της σκηνης αυτου· θελει με υψωσει επι βραχον·
6. και ηδη η κεφαλη μου θελει υψωθη υπερανω των εχθρων μου των περικυκλουντων με· και θελω θυσιασει εν τη σκηνη αυτου θυσιας αλαλαγμου· θελω υμνει και θελω ψαλμωδει εις τον Κυριον.
7. Ακουσον, Κυριε, της φωνης μου, οταν κραζω· και ελεησον με και εισακουσον μου.
8. Ζητησατε το προσωπον μου, ειπε περι σου η καρδια μου. Το προσωπον σου, Κυριε, θελω ζητησει.
9. Μη κρυψης απ' εμου το προσωπον σου· μη απορριψης εν οργη τον δουλον σου· συ εσταθης βοηθεια μου· μη με αφησης και μη με εγκαταλειψης, Θεε της σωτηριας μου.
10. Και αν ο πατηρ μου και η μητηρ μου με εγκαταλειψωσιν, ο Κυριος ομως θελει με προσδεχθη.
11. Διδαξον με, Κυριε, την οδον σου και οδηγησον με εν οδω ευθεια ενεκεν των εχθρων μου.
12. Μη με παραδωσης εις την επιθυμιαν των εχθρων μου· διοτι ηγερθησαν κατ' εμου μαρτυρες ψευδεις και πνεοντες αδικιαν.
13. Ουαι εαν δεν επιστευον να ιδω τα αγαθα του Κυριου εν γη ζωντων.
14. Προσμενε τον Κυριον· ανδριζου, και ας κραταιωθη η καρδια σου· και προσμενε τον Κυριον. |
Vocabulary and Parsing Aids
Versification Issues
The chapter number of LXX Psalm 26 is different in the Greek and Latin than in the traditional Protestant English, Hebrew and Modern Greek texts which number this as Psalm 27. The reason is that the Greek counts Psalm 9 and 10 as a single psalm, which changes the numbering for Psalms beginning with Psalm 10. See the Wikipedia article on the Psalms for further information. The verse numbering is also different between the three versions for verse 1, where the Protestant versions do not include the title as verse 1. The Greek and Latin count the title/epithet as part of verse 1. The verse numbering for the rest of LXX Psalm 26(MT 27) is identical in all versions. The NETS translation shows both numberings.
Brenton and Mozley use the traditional Protestant chapter numbering Psalm 27.

For a list of Psalters see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psalter . Also look under the "Book of Hours" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_hours. Most of these medieval manuscripts are in Latin. I'm sure there must be some in Greek also. Many are on the Psalms of Degrees (119-133 in the Septuagint, also called Song of Ascents) or Penitential Psalms (6, 31, 37, 50, 101, 129, and 142 in the Septuagint numbering). The Psalms we are reading are Psalms 1, 8, 19(18), 21(22), 22(23), 23(24), 26(27), 31(32), 33(34), and 50(51).
The British Library has many images of the Psalms and Psalters. There are 73 images of pages of "Illuminated" Psalms and Prayer books. Finding images of a specific Psalm is not as easy as on would first think. There are many images of Psalm 1, Psalm 6, Psalm 51(50), and others, but not many for the Psalms we are reading. (1) The Lord is my illumination and my deliverer;
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is my life’s protector;
of whom shall I be in dread?
2 When wicked people would approach me
to devour my flesh—
those that afflict me and my enemies—
they became weak and fell.
3 Though a camp be arrayed against me,
my heart shall not fear;
though war rise up against me,
in thise I hope.
4 One I requested of the Lord,
thise will I seek,
to live in the Lord’s house
all the days of my life,
to behold the pleasantness of the Lord
and to visit his shrine,
5 because he hid me in a tent in the day of
troubles,
he sheltered me in the secret spot of his
tent;
high on a rock he set me.
6 And now, look, he set my head high against my enemies;
I made the rounds and sacrificed in his tent a sacrifice with shouting;
I will sing and make music to the Lord.

A Psalm of David, before he was anointed.
27:1 The Lord is my light and my Saviour; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the defender of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When evil-doers drew nigh against me to eat up my flesh, my persecutors and mine enemies, they fainted and fell. 3 Though an army should set itself in array against me, my heart shall not be afraid: though war should rise up against me, in this am I confident. 4 One thing have I asked of the Lord, this will I earnestly seek: that I should dwell in the house of the Lord, all the days of my life, that I should behold the fair beauty of the Lord, and survey his temple. 5 For in the day of mine afflictions he hid me in his tabernacle: he sheltered me in the secret of his tabernacle; he set me up on a rock. 6 And now, behold, he has lifted up mine head over mine enemies: I went round and offered in his tabernacle the sacrifice of joy; I will sing even sing psalms to the Lord.
