While I'm Waiting ΔΗ ΓΕ ΜΕΝΩΝ ΥΠΟΜΕΝΩ
Greek Text English Text Textfile Scripture Chreia Pedagogy Idioms Vocabulary Rating
This song was made popular in the movie "Fireproof." This Greek of this song plays on the meanins of μένω. ἀναμένω, ὑπομένω, can all mean "to wait". μένω is used by John, however, to mean 'abide in'; ὑπομένω can have the idea of enduring an uncomfortable situation; ὑπομονή is 'patience, endurance'. A number of suggestions are given for making alternative lines and phrases in the Chreia section below.

Chreia Adaptations and Variations
- The different words for wait could be changed:
- μένω

- θρέξομαι τὸνδε δρόμον
- τὸν ἀγῶνα δραμοῦμαι.
Use in Greek Pedagogy
This song uses a fairly simple sentence structure throughtout. The basic pattern is participle followed by a cognate verb.
- μένων μένω
- ὑπομένων ὑπμένω
- All verbs are in the 1st person singular: -ω -ομαι; -σω,
- The future of τρέχω is a middle (liquid?): δραμοῦμαι
- The present and future of liquid verbs: μένω ~ μενῶ
- Participles of attendent circumstances: ὑπομένων ὑπομένω.The particple of attendent circumstances usually precedes the verb it accompanies. μένων, ὑπομένων, ἐλπίζων, ἠρεμῶν, βαδίζων, ὤν
- Aorist Subjunctive of emphatic negation: οὐ μὴ ἀποψύξω (line 15, 34)
- Instrumental dative: παρρησίᾳ μακροθυμίᾳ (lines 8,9,26,27)
- Various uses of particles
- δή
- δή γε; δή γ'
- εἰ και (= καὶ εἰ)
- ἦ
- ἦ μὴν
- The femine forms could be added, but some syllables would have to be changed for the meter:
- μένουσα
- ἠρεμοῦσα
- βαδίζουσα
- πιστή
Notes on the Idioms and Word Choices.
- δραμοῦμαι is the future for τρέχω, "I run". θρέξομαι is an old less-used word.
