While I'm Waiting   ΔΗ ΓΕ ΜΕΝΩΝ ΥΠΟΜΕΝΩ

This song was made popular in the movie "Fireproof." This Greek of this song plays on the meanins of μένω. ἀναμένω, ὑπομένω, can all mean "to wait". μένω is used by John, however, to mean 'abide in'; ὑπομένω can have the idea of enduring an uncomfortable situation; ὑπομονή is 'patience, endurance'. A number of suggestions are given for making alternative lines and phrases in the Chreia section below.

English Text

While I'm Waiting

Verse 1
I'm waiting
I'm waiting on You, Lord
And I am hopeful
I'm waiting on You, Lord
Though it is painful
But patiently, I will wait

Verse 2
I will move ahead, bold and confident
Taking every step in obedience
While I'm waiting
I will serve You
While I'm waiting
I will worship
While I'm waiting
I will not faint
I'll be running the race
Even while I wait

Verse 3
I'm waiting
I'm waiting on You, Lord
And I am peaceful
I'm waiting on You, Lord
Though it's not easy
But faithfully, I will wait
Yes, I will wait
I will serve You while I'm waiting
I will worship while I'm waiting
I will serve You while I'm waiting
I will worship while I'm waiting
I will serve you while I'm waiting
I will worship while I'm waiting on You, Lord

Greek (Westcott-Hort)   English Standard Version Translation (2001)
     31     but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
          they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.
Heb 12.1 Τοιγαροῦν καὶ ἡμεῖς τοσοῦτον ἔχοντες περικείμενον ἡμῖν νέφος μαρτύρων, ὄγκον ἀποθέμενοι πάντα καὶ τὴν εὐπερίστατον ἁμαρτίαν, διʼ ὑπομονῆς τρέχωμεν τὸν προκείμενον ἡμῖν ἀγῶνα   Heb 12.1  Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, andsin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Acts 20.24 But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

1 Cor 9.24-27 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives sthe prize? So trun that you may obtain it. 25 Every uathlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we van imperishable. 26 So I do not run aimlessly; I wdo not box as one xbeating the air. 27 But I discipline my body and ykeep it under control, lest after preaching to others zI myself should be adisqualified.

Chreia Adaptations and Variations

Use in Greek Pedagogy

This song uses a fairly simple sentence structure throughtout. The basic pattern is participle followed by a cognate verb.

Notes on the Idioms and Word Choices.

  1. δραμοῦμαι is the future for τρέχω, "I run". θρέξομαι is an old less-used word.
